Fresh political tension is brewing within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and a bloc of governors continue to push for greater control of key party structures and the zoning of the party’s 2027 presidential ticket.
At a high-level meeting in Abuja, Wike and his allies — including former G5 governors — reiterated their demand that the PDP presidential ticket be zoned to the South. They also declared support for Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the substantive National Secretary of the party, citing a recent Supreme Court ruling that affirmed his position. According to them, any notices or directives issued by rival claimants to the office should be considered invalid.
Insiders describe the development as a political mind game, with Wike testing the limits of his influence while signaling to the PDP leadership the importance of loyalty and recognition. However, some party stakeholders have expressed concern that the latest moves could deepen divisions within the opposition party at a time when unity is most needed.
Already, cracks are beginning to show in various states. Reports suggest growing strain between Wike and some PDP governors, including Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State. While Wike’s camp maintains that restructuring is necessary to achieve fairness and balance in the PDP, critics warn that the ongoing power tussle could derail efforts to reposition the party for national relevance ahead of the 2027 elections.
