Police intervene after property owner allegedly dismantles roof, exposes tenant’s belongings to rain damage.
Port Harcourt, Nigeria – Operatives of the Ozuoba Police Division have arrested a landlord, Frimpong Samuel, for allegedly removing the roof of his tenant’s apartment in a contentious rent dispute along NTA Road, Port Harcourt.
The incident occurred after the tenant, Tochukwu Anozie, failed to vacate the property two weeks following the expiration of his rent agreement.
According to the Rivers State Police Command Spokesperson, CSP Grace Iringe Koko, Samuel will be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
Narrating his ordeal, Anozie stated that his landlord served him a notice in December 2024, instructing him not to renew his tenancy as he intended to renovate the apartment. Anozie’s rent was due to expire in January 2026.
The tenant explained that he had already secured and paid for a new apartment but requested a 14-day grace period from Samuel to facilitate his relocation.
Anozie expressed shock that before the grace period elapsed, Samuel arrived with a carpenter and removed the roof of the building. The action left his belongings exposed to the elements, resulting in significant damage from rain. Among items destroyed were several personal effects and his academic certificates.
Anozie is now calling for justice, urging authorities to ensure restitution for his losses and appropriate legal action against the landlord.
The police have assured the public of a thorough investigation and due process in handling the case.
