Yagba Action Group urges President to back district’s 2027 gubernatorial bid, citing 34-year marginalization.
Lokoja, Nigeria – The Yagba Action Group (YAG) has formally appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and support the rotation of the Kogi State governorship to the West Senatorial District in the 2027 election.
The group, led by veteran journalist and former presidential aide Dr. Tunde Olusunle, made the call during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday. YAG argued that Kogi West has contributed significantly to the state’s political and economic development yet has not produced a governor in over 34 years since the state’s creation.
YAG firmly rejected suggestions that the district should wait until 2031 for its turn, describing such proposals as deliberate attempts to entrench political imbalance and further marginalize the zone.
The group pointed to the controversial 2015 governorship election, where Hon. James Abiodun Faleke, a native of Kogi West and running mate to the late APC candidate Prince Abubakar Audu, was denied the opportunity to assume office following Audu’s demise. YAG stated that this incident deepened longstanding feelings of injustice and exclusion within the district.
In its appeal, YAG described President Tinubu as a national leader renowned for his commitment to fairness and political equity. The group urged him to use his influence to ensure the governorship is zoned to Kogi West in 2027, a move they believe will promote unity, justice, and democratic balance in the Confluence State.
“Equity and inclusion are the bedrock of lasting democracy,” Dr. Olusunle stated. “Kogi West has waited patiently and contributed immensely. It is time for justice to prevail, and we trust in Mr. President’s wisdom to support this cause.”
