6MW plant in Oyo State handed over under PPP model to boost renewable energy supply.
Iseyin, Oyo State – The Federal Government has officially concessioned the 6MW Ikere Gorge Hydropower Plant in Iseyin to Messrs Quaint Power and Infrastructure Nigeria Limited under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.
The handover ceremony was performed on Thursday by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, and the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.
Prof. Utsev described the concession as a major milestone in the government’s drive to bridge infrastructure gaps and boost sustainable power generation through private sector investment. He commended the role of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) in ensuring transparency, value for money and efficiency in PPP projects.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to leveraging private sector expertise and capital to complement public investment,” Utsev stated. He noted that the Ikere Gorge project resulted from a longstanding collaboration between the Ministries of Water Resources and Power dating back to 2012, aimed at harnessing Nigeria’s hydropower potential.
Minister Adelabu reaffirmed the government’s dedication to private-sector-led growth in the power sector, calling the concession a new chapter in sustainable energy development.
“The Ikere Gorge Dam was originally built for water supply and irrigation. Today, we are repositioning it as a strategic asset for clean, renewable energy generation,” Adelabu said.
The 6MW plant is expected to contribute to Nigeria’s electricity grid while promoting environmentally friendly power sources. The concession is structured to ensure operational efficiency and increased power availability in the region.
