The Kogi State Government has issued a stern warning that any youth caught assisting bandits will now be treated as a terrorist. This declaration was made by State Security Adviser, Commodore Jerry Omodara (rtd), during a recent update on the fight against insecurity in Kogi West.
Speaking at the palace of the Elegbe of Egbe, Omodara revealed that intelligence reports indicate some youths in Okunland are using motorcycles to transport weapons and food to bandits hiding in the forests. He disclosed that seven to nine youths are already on a government watchlist for allegedly being on the payroll of criminal elements.
“Some of our youth have links with bandits,” Omodara said. “The government will not hesitate to treat them like bandits.”
The Security Adviser also lamented that some women in Okunland have been selling food and drinks to criminals and even providing them with sensitive information. He alleged that others have gone as far as forming relationships with the bandits.
Furthermore, Omodara warned that residents in Yagba West who have paid ransoms to bandits to avoid being kidnapped would also be exposed as collaborators.
A Call to Embrace Agriculture
In a separate but related appeal, Omodara expressed disappointment that while many indigenes neglect farming, Fulani people are now cultivating okra, pepper, and maize in Okunland.
“Our people are becoming too lazy,” he stated. “It is time for the youth to channel their energy into agriculture to improve their lives. The state government has invested in inputs and opportunities, and Okun people should take advantage of them.”
Omodara concluded by reassuring the community that the government is fully committed to flushing out bandits, securing communities, and restoring the confidence of farmers so they can safely return to their lands.
