A human rights advocate, Adeyanju Deji, has raised a serious alarm regarding the plight of Nigerian citizens being held in the “civil de Djagbo” prison in Abomey-Calavi, Republic of Benin. In a recent statement, Deji revealed that a formal petition has been submitted to the Nigerian Senate, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Disapora Commission, and the Embassy of Benin Republic, calling for an urgent intervention.
The petition highlights the disturbing conditions under which the Nigerian detainees are being held. According to Deji, these individuals have been denied access to fair trials and basic legal protections, a clear violation of their fundamental human rights.
Even more tragically, one of the detainees, identified as Salami Deyomi, has reportedly died in prison custody. This alarming death underscores the severity of the situation and the harsh, inhumane, and degrading conditions that other Nigerians continue to endure behind bars.
