A longstanding but often overlooked connection between politics and Nollywood has come to light, revealing that former Oyo State Governor and the current Olúbàdàn of Ibadan, His Imperial Majesty Oba Sen. Rashidi Ladoja, played a crucial role as a major financier for several iconic films by renowned director Túndé Kelani of Mainframe Productions.
The discovery gained attention after a keen observer noted Ladoja’s name credited as Executive Producer in one of Kelani’s works, prompting deeper inquiry into his behind-the-scenes contributions to the Yoruba film industry.
In a recorded interview available online, Kelani himself acknowledged the significant financial backing provided by the Olúbàdàn, describing it as vital support that helped bring culturally significant projects to life during critical periods in Nigerian cinema.
Veteran actress Bukky Wright, whose career soared after starring in Kelani’s critically acclaimed political drama “Saworoide” in 1999, has also publicly expressed gratitude for Ladoja’s support. Wright, a household name in Yoruba film, attributed part of her rise and the sustainability of meaningful cinema to such patronage from culturally committed leaders.
