Estate Association cites security, privacy concerns after Airbnb-linked criminal breach.
Ikoyi, Lagos – The Banana Island Estate in Ikoyi has imposed a total ban on short‑let and Airbnb operations across the community, effective Monday, February 9, 2026. The decision follows a recent security breach linked to criminal activities carried out through rented apartments.
In a statement issued by the Banana Island Property Owners and Residents Association (BIPORAL), the executive committee stated that investigations revealed short‑let apartments were being exploited by criminals to gain unauthorized access into the gated estate, endangering residents and undermining communal safety.
“The transient nature of short‑let arrangements undermines collective security, residents’ privacy, and overall community cohesion,” the statement read. “This decision, though difficult, is necessary to protect our safe, serene, and exclusive environment.”
The ban comes after police, acting on a tip‑off from the estate’s security team, raided a short‑let apartment at George Residences on Femi Pedro Street. The operation, supported by the Assistant Inspector‑General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Onikan, led to the arrest of eight suspects believed to belong to a theft ring that had been operating within Banana Island for months.
During the raid, law enforcement recovered vehicles, phones, a laptop, stolen items, and criminal disguises. The suspects have reportedly confessed to the crimes.
BIPORAL reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and the estate’s legacy, assuring residents that the ban is a proactive step toward restoring and maintaining long‑term security and privacy.
